“Keep close to nature’s heart and break clear away once in a while, and climb a mountain or spend a week in the woods. Wash your spirit clean.” –John Muir
This morning I woke up to birdsong and streaming sunlight through my cabin window. The scent of autumn filled the air. All was embraced in a cloak of peace. I walked out to the trail as leaves began their graceful descent onto the ground. I love this wilderness that I am so blessed to call “home.” There’s nothing more soothing to my soul than sitting against an old tree as the earth infuses me with energy. All my worries melt away as my mind becomes clear once again.
We need moments of solitude, with nothing but the beauty of nature around us.
For many years, I lived on a tropical island on the other side of the world. Although beautiful in its own way, I longed for the deeper roots of my homeland — the mountains and forests that have always been my most treasured companions. Now that I’m nestled in the Pacific Northwest, I seek out new adventures every day. There’s a feeling of gentleness in this land that I haven’t experienced anywhere else. It infuses me with wonder and allows me to feel without filters. What a magical land this is.
As I was returning home from my walk the other evening, I noticed an owl in a nearby tree. She took flight and perched herself upon a branch a short distance away from me. I stood there for what felt like forever, just staring into her intense eyes. She never took her glance away. We shared a connection that I have never felt before – as if she was speaking to me in a language that goes beyond the rational mind. After a while, I thanked her for her presence and began to run along the trail. I will always remember the gift of that beautiful owl. Something only found in the stillness of nature.
As summer gives way to fall, with winter just around the corner, I’m savoring every opportunity to get outdoors and commune with the wild. My spirit needs to settle into places off the beaten path. Nature is my sanctuary.
“The clearest way into the universe is through a forest wilderness.” –John Muir
