“Spiritual practice is not just sitting and meditating. Practice is looking, thinking, touching, drinking, eating, and talking. Every act, every breath, and every step can be practice and can help us to become more ourselves” – Thich Nhat Hanh
You know that one thing you can do or see when you’re happy or sad, excited or upset? And it is there for you no matter what? Are you thinking of it right now? Your dearest pets or friends probably came to mind, or maybe your favorite book or exercise. But mine? My hula hoops <3
I know I know, it might sound super cheesy and weird. Hula hoops?? Yes hula hoops! My circles of plastic mean so much more than what one may think. Hooping is so much more than just a hobby I love & enjoy.
Moving Meditation
I pick up my hoop to meditate. When I’m dancing, nothing else matters. It is my form of moving mediation. My mind begins to clear and focus only on my flow, not the worries of the rest of my day. It is only me, myself, & my circle. I am buzzing and so refreshed after a good hoop sesh. When I’m happy I pick up my hoop. When I’m sad I pick up my hoop. My circle are always there!
Easy Cardio
I pick up my hoop to groove. Some days are more lazy than others, I’ll admit it. So when I feel like I haven’t moved enough in a day, I pick up my hoop! If I dance hard enough I start to sweat, no joke! Picking up a heavier hoop and waist hooping for 10 minutes is a great cardio workout. If I don’t have a lot of time, I like to turn on one of my favorite songs and just groove! Hula hooping is an incredibly easy way to get your body moving. Sometimes I even hoop dance to warm up before I exercise. It is the best fun! A moving body is a happy body, so get hoopin’! 😜
Connection
I pick up my hoop to connect. When I started my hoop journey in 2013 I never imagined I would meet so many other hoopers! I love seeing other hoopers at festivals & learning from them! I also connect with others through social media. Hoopers post their flows & dances to Instagram using hashtags like #hoopersofig & #hooplove. I’ve even met the most amazing ladies through Instagram that live in my city that also hoop dance! It fills my heart with so much love! I am so grateful.
When others see my hoops they probably only see plastic circles. But I see way more than that. It is my practice. (:
Hope you enjoyed this read! I’m off to Hoop Camp in Northern California this weekend to meet some of my hoop idols! PEACE! <3
